For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. – Hebrews 4:15 (KJV)
Let us reflect on the immense cost borne by our Savior during His time in the wilderness of temptation, as He carried forward the struggle against the cunning and malicious enemy on our behalf. Satan understood that everything hinged on his success or failure in leading Christ to succumb to his temptations. If Jesus endured the trials and overcame where Adam had fallen, the plan of salvation would move forward, Satan’s power would be stripped, and his destruction would be inevitable.
Satan’s temptations had proven devastating to humanity, degrading human nature and leading to sin. Alone, mankind could not resist his powerful influence. Yet Christ, as our representative, rested fully in the power of God and resisted every assault. His victory in this severe conflict stands as the perfect example for us. There is hope for humanity. The work set before us is to overcome as Christ overcame.
Jesus fasted for forty days, enduring the piercing agony of hunger. His suffering for our sake went beyond anything we can fully grasp. Yet, through His suffering, He provided a path for us to follow. We are called to embrace trials and endure challenges out of love for Him, so we too may overcome and be exalted to share in the throne of our Redeemer.
In our struggle against the powerful enemy, we stand to gain everything. We cannot, however, yield to temptation even for a moment. On our own, we are powerless to triumph, but Christ—having humbled Himself, taken on our nature, and faced the fiercest temptations imaginable—teaches us how to resist. Through His own victory, He equips us to follow His example.
Jesus shared in our humanity, bearing a body like ours and enduring trials and sufferings far beyond anything we are called to face. He bore not the sins of one individual but the sins of the entire world. He endured humiliation, insults, suffering, and death so that, by following His example, we might inherit all things.
May we, in every trial, fix our eyes on Jesus and draw strength from His triumph, walking faithfully in the path He has laid before us. His victory assures us that we, too, can overcome through Him.
