"Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right." – Proverbs 20:11 (KJV)
God desires that children and youth enlist in His army. Just as older believers face strong temptations, so do the young. Satan and his forces employ every deception to lead them astray. But children have the privilege of joining the ranks of the Lord and inviting others to do the same. From an early age, they should be trained and prepared for Jesus Christ. They must be taught to resist temptation and to fight the good fight of faith. Direct their minds to Christ as soon as they can understand simple lessons. Teach them self-control. Help them begin the work of overcoming sin while they are young, and they will receive the precious help that Jesus is willing to provide, especially when joined with the faithful prayers of their parents. Encourage them with words of support as they face trials and learn to be victorious through the grace of Jesus Christ.
Parents should fill the hearts of their children with the precious words of Jesus. They will repeat what they often hear from their parents—about Christ, faith, and truth. Even young children can speak valuable truths. Whole armies of children can be raised under the banner of Christ as missionaries, even in their earliest years. Never discourage a child's desire to do something for Jesus. Do not extinguish their enthusiasm to serve the Master in any way they can. Properly trained, children will learn to love Jesus and will grieve when they realize they have displeased Him by sinning. Keep their hearts tender and sensitive through your own words and example.
The angels of God are always near your little ones. Let love, patience, and self-control guide your words at all times. The love that wins hearts should be like deep waters—flowing continuously in the care of your children. Throughout His life, Christ continually demonstrated love and kindness toward children. Let us follow His example and nurture the next generation to be faithful soldiers in His cause.
