“For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.”—Matthew 5:20 (KJV)

The righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees was self-centered, consisting only of outward forms. But the righteousness that God requires reaches inward as well as outward. The heart must be purified, or Christ cannot dwell there. Our lives must be brought into harmony with the will of God.

Outward forms can never take the place of inward godliness. The Jewish teachers prided themselves on their righteousness and condemned all who differed from them as cursed. They shut the doors of heaven to others, insisting that only those trained in their schools could be considered just. Yet, in all their ceremonies and rigid demands, they insulted God. They despised the very ones who were precious in the eyes of the Lord.

Human inventions, plans, and strategies will prove worthless. Only in Christ Jesus can the church stand firm as the time of His coming draws near. Our Redeemer calls His people to advance in godliness, grow in zeal, and gain a deeper understanding of their “high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14, KJV) as the end approaches.

Glorious truths are yet to be revealed to God’s people. Privileges and responsibilities that many do not even realize are found in Scripture will be brought to light. As Christ’s followers move forward in humble obedience, doing God’s will, they will grow in their understanding of His Word and be established in sound doctrine.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit will sweep away human pride, tear down self-made barriers, and silence the spirit that says, “I am holier than thou.” A spirit of humility will prevail, with greater faith and love. Self will not be exalted. The spirit and example of Christ will be clearly seen in His people. We will walk more closely in the footsteps of Jesus, and His love will fill our hearts.
