    • Genesis 2:7: "The LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

    • Answer: Man is a combination of dust and the breath of life. (Living soul = dust + breath of life)


  2. What happens to man’s body at death?

    • Genesis 3:19: "For dust you are, and to dust you shall return."

    • Answer: The body returns to the dust.


  3. What is the nature of man’s breath?

    • Job 27:3: "All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils."

    • Answer: The breath of life is the spirit given by God.


  4. Does man have an immortal soul?

    • Ezekiel 18:4: "The soul who sins shall die."

    • Answer: The soul is mortal and can die.



The State of the Dead

  1. What happens to man's breath at death?

    • Psalm 146:4: "His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish."

    • Answer: The breath leaves, and thoughts cease.


  2. Where does man's spirit go at death?

    • Ecclesiastes 12:7: "The dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns unto God who gave it."

    • Answer: The spirit (breath of life) returns to God.


  3. Do the dead have any awareness?

    • Ecclesiastes 9:5: "The dead know not anything."

    • Answer: The dead are unconscious.


  4. Can the dead praise God?

    • Psalm 115:17: "The dead praise not the Lord."

    • Answer: The dead are silent and cannot praise God.


  5. What happens to man's emotions at death?

    • Ecclesiastes 9:6: "Their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished."

    • Answer: Emotions cease at death.



Death as Sleep

  1. What is death compared to in the Bible?

    • John 11:11: "Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep."

    • Answer: Death is likened to sleep.


  2. How long do the dead remain asleep?

    • Job 14:12: "So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more."

    • Answer: The dead sleep until the resurrection.


  3. Where do the dead sleep?

    • Daniel 12:2: "Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake."

    • Answer: The dead sleep in the dust.



Resurrection and Hope

  1. What is the hope for the dead?

    • 1 Thessalonians 4:16: "The dead in Christ shall rise first."

    • Answer: The righteous dead will rise at Christ’s return.


  2. What happens to the righteous at resurrection?

    • 1 Corinthians 15:42: "It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption."

    • Answer: The righteous are raised immortal and incorruptible.


  3. Who enables the resurrection?

    • 1 Corinthians 15:22: "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive."

    • Answer: Resurrection is made possible through Christ.


  4. When will immortality be given to the righteous?

    • 1 Corinthians 15:53: "For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality."

    • Answer: Immortality is given at the resurrection.


  5. What will be the final victory over death?

    • 1 Corinthians 15:55: "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?"

    • Answer: Death will be defeated at the resurrection.



Conclusion

  1. What is the ultimate fate of man without God?

    • Romans 6:23: "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

    • Answer: Without God, man dies; eternal life is only through Christ.


  2. Who alone possesses immortality?

    • 1 Timothy 6:15-16: "Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto."

    • Answer: Only God is immortal.


  3. What is the final condition of the redeemed?

    1. Luke 20:36: "Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels."

Answer: The redeemed will live forever, equal to the angels.
